Key Concepts

Parimutuel

A system where all bets on an outcome are pooled together. Payouts are calculated by sharing the pool among winners, rather than setting fixed odds up front. This is the same model used in horse racing and tote betting.

Stake

The amount of tokens a user commits to a prediction. Your stake goes into the market pool and is at risk. You get it back (plus profits) only if your chosen outcome wins. Markets can be denominated in HIVE, HBD, or a Hive Engine token.

Trading Cutoff

The point after which new predictions are no longer accepted. This prevents users from betting after the outcome is already known or nearly certain. Predictions submitted after cutoff are automatically refunded.

Late-Entry Penalty

In crypto YES/NO markets, predictions placed closer to the cutoff receive reduced profit-share weighting. This rewards conviction: early predictors earn a proportionally larger share of the profit pool. Principal is always returned in full.

Resolution

The process of determining the market outcome. Price markets resolve automatically via CoinGecko and Investing.com market data. Sports markets for supported leagues (NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, NRL, AFL, EPL) resolve automatically via The Odds API. Other markets are resolved manually, supported by community proof submissions.

Proof Submission

For manually resolved markets, creators, bettors, and admins can submit proof of the outcome with source URLs. Other users can vote on proof submissions. Markets that opt in to early resolution can be resolved before betting close if sufficient proof is provided.
